Public water supply
Just 7% of community drinking water systems serve more than 10,000 people each, but they supply 81 percent of those served by drinking water systems. "Very large" systems, defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as ones with more than 100,000 customers, represent 1% of drinking water systems but serve nearly 45% of all people served. American Society of Civil Engineers estimates there are 800,000 miles of drinking water system pipes 500,000 miles of sewer lines. These water pipes and sewer lines also represent areas sensitive to terrorist attack. The U.S. public water supply is often taken for granted. There are approximately 170,000 public water systems in the United States and those water systems that rely on reservoirs to supply public drinking water are the most at risk for contamination or attack. Though outnumbered by the small systems, the relative handful of large water systems serves the great majority of people.
